What after hours costs
HomeAdvisor puts after-hours AC technicians at $160 to $250 per hour2, and says electricians charge time-and-a-half to double their standard rate plus a trip charge of $100 or more3.
For plumbers it says weekend, holiday and after-hours work comes at a higher hourly rate, on top of service-call fees of $100 to $2501. Networx also tells readers to expect a premium for plumbing work after hours, on weekends or on holidays4.
Call now or wait?
| Problem | Usually call now | Often can wait for normal hours |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Water you cannot shut off, or water reaching wiring | A leak that stops when the fixture or main valve is closed |
| Electrical | Burning smell, sparks, a hot panel or outlet | A breaker that trips once and resets |
| Heating and cooling | No heat in freezing weather, or no cooling in dangerous heat for vulnerable people | A unit that runs but cools or heats poorly |
| Roof | Water coming through a ceiling during a storm | A missing shingle with no leak inside |
General guidance, not a safety rule. If you smell gas or see fire, leave the house and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
Before the pro arrives
Step 1
Stop what you safely can
Close the water valve or switch off the circuit if you know where it is.
Step 2
Write down what happened
When it started, what you saw and any model numbers. Pros price faster with details.
Step 3
Ask about fees on the phone
Trip or service-call fee, the after-hours rate, and whether the visit fee is credited to the repair.
Step 4
Get the price before the fix
Even at night, a price for the repair should come before the repair.

Cost figures are national ranges published by the sources named on each page, on the date we read them. Your price depends on your home, your area and the pro. The partner's or pro's own page and written quote are the final word on price, coverage and terms.
