How electricians price work

HomeAdvisor gives $50 to $130 per hour for electricians, plus a service-call fee of $100 to $200 for the first hour, and a normal job range of $163 to $5381. Networx describes three pricing methods: hourly with a minimum, service fee plus hourly, or a flat fee per job, and notes that travel mileage may be added2.

After hours costs more: time-and-a-half to double the standard rate plus a trip charge of $100 or more1. A tripped breaker that resets is not an emergency; burning smells, sparks or a hot panel are reasons to switch off power at the main and call right away.

Supplies are usually extra. Fixtures and parts are not part of the hourly rate, although a flat installation price may include them, and the first estimate is often free2.

Electrical questions

Is the first estimate free?

Networx says the initial estimate for an installation is often free2. Ask before the visit; a service-call fee may still apply to repairs.

When is it an emergency?

Burning smells, sparks or a hot panel or outlet: switch off power at the main and call. A breaker that trips once and resets can wait for a weekday.
