How plumbers price a job

HomeAdvisor's 2026 cost guide gives a normal range of $182 to $501 for hiring a plumber, with an average of $3411. Networx gives $170 to $4303. The two ranges overlap; neither is a quote.

Ask how they bill before they arrive. By the hour, often with a 2-hour minimum; a flat service-call fee plus an hourly rate; or a flat fee for the whole job3. Service-call fees run $100 to $250 and trip fees $50 to $3001.

After hours costs more. Both sources say weekend, holiday and after-hours work carries a higher rate13. If the water is off and the leak is contained, a weekday appointment is usually the cheaper call.

Water heater repairs by part

The whole repair typically runs $228 to $1,017, average $616. The part that failed sets where you land.

Plumbing questions

How do Bark, Networx and eLocal differ?

Bark and Networx take a short description of the job and pass it to pros in your area, who send quotes. eLocal connects you to a local provider by phone. Each site's own terms explain who contacts you.

Is a burst pipe always an after-hours job?

Not always. If you can shut the water off and the leak stops, the repair can often wait for normal hours, which the sources above say cost less.

Is the service-call fee extra?

Usually. HomeAdvisor lists service-call fees of $100 to $250 on top of the hourly rate1. Ask whether it is credited toward the repair if you hire them.
